Scripture Focus: Galuega 15:22–29
And certain men which came down from Judea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
- Acts 15:22–29 (KJV)
Study:
The early church faced a pivotal question about Gentile believers: must they follow the Jewish law, including circumcision, to be saved? In Acts 15, we see the apostles and elders gathering in Jerusalem to resolve this controversy. They affirm salvation by grace through faith in Jesus, not by the works of the law. The council decides not to burden Gentile believers with the full Mosaic law but requests they abstain from things polluted by idols, sexual immorality, and blood. This moment profoundly shapes the inclusive nature of Christianity and the understanding that God's salvation is for all peoples.
Application:
Today, this passage reminds us that God's grace extends beyond cultural or religious boundaries. We are called to embrace people from all backgrounds and to focus on the core of the gospel rather than legalistic requirements. It challenges us to avoid judgments on those who come to faith differently and to celebrate the unity we have in Christ. As the Church changes and grows, may we maintain a welcoming spirit, focusing on love and faith above rituals.
Reflection Questions:
- How do I respond to believers with different cultural or religious backgrounds?
- Am I sometimes tempted to add 'rules' to faith that are not essential to salvation?
- What does this passage teach me about God's heart for inclusion and unity?
- How can I help foster a welcoming atmosphere in my church or community?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your boundless grace that welcomes all people. Help us to embrace diversity in the body of Christ and to focus on faith in You above all else. Teach us to love inclusively and to walk in unity, reflecting Your heart to the world. In Jesus' name, Amen.
