Scripture Focus: Mareko 14:1–9
After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.
- Mark 14:1–9 (KJV)
Study:
This passage sets the stage for a crucial moment in Jesus' journey to the cross. The chief priests and scribes, representing the religious authorities, begin plotting deceitfully to arrest Jesus and ultimately bring about His death. Their plans, though well laid, reveal a hardness of heart and a rejection of God's redemptive work in Jesus. Amidst this backdrop, an unnamed woman anoints Jesus with expensive ointment, an act of love and devotion that contrasts sharply with the scheming around her. Jesus acknowledges her gift as preparing Him for burial, demonstrating that God's plan, though seemingly overshadowed by human schemes, is moving irresistibly forward.
Application:
Like the religious leaders, we sometimes try to control situations with our own plans, often missing God's greater purpose. This passage reminds us that God's sovereign plan will prevail despite human opposition or deception. We are also challenged to respond like the woman, offering our heartfelt devotion and recognizing Jesus’ authority over our lives. In times of uncertainty or opposition, we can trust that God’s plan is perfect, and our acts of faith and love serve His eternal purposes.
Reflection Questions:
- What are some “plans” I have made that may conflict with God’s purposes?
- How can I imitate the unnamed woman’s example of devotion in my daily life?
- In what ways does trusting God’s sovereign plan bring peace amid uncertainty?
- How do I respond when I encounter opposition or obstacles in my faith journey?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to align my plans with Yours, trusting that Your will is perfect even when I do not understand. Give me a heart like the woman’s — full of love and devotion — that I may honor You in all I do. Strengthen me to stand firm when faced with challenges, knowing Your purpose will never fail. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
