Now in the things which we are saying, the main point is this. We have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
- Hebrews 8:1- 9:10 (WEB)

Study:

The book of Hebrews draws our attention to the superiority and permanence of Jesus Christ’s role as the high priest of a new covenant. Unlike the Levitical priests of the Old Testament, who had to offer sacrifices repeatedly, Jesus offered one perfect sacrifice, securing eternal redemption for believers (Hebrews 9:12). Hebrews 8 highlights how this new covenant, established through Christ, surpasses the old one, which was based on the law and rituals that pointed forward to what was to come. As our high priest, Jesus intercedes for us continually, having entered the heavenly sanctuary and seated at God’s right hand, affirming His authority and the finality of His work. This passage reassures believers of a direct and ongoing relationship with God through Jesus, who embodies a covenant characterized by grace and truth rather than repeated ceremonial sacrifices.

Application:

Understanding Jesus as the high priest of the new covenant challenges us to rest in the completion of His sacrificial work rather than rely on our own efforts for acceptance before God. It invites us to approach God boldly and with confidence, knowing Jesus intercedes for us. This awareness brings peace amid life’s struggles and motivates us to live faithfully under this new covenant, embracing the transformation Christ offers. We are called to trust His perfect sacrifice, receive His grace daily, and share the hope of this eternal covenant with others.

Reflection Questions:

  • How does knowing Jesus is our high priest change the way you approach God in prayer?
  • In what ways do you try to earn God’s favor that this passage says you no longer need to?
  • How can you live more fully in the grace of the new covenant today?
  • What does Jesus’ intercession mean for your daily struggles and temptations?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for being our great high priest who offers one perfect sacrifice for all. Help us to rest in Your finished work and to draw near to You with confidence. Teach us to live in the freedom and grace of the new covenant, trusting in Your continuous intercession on our behalf. Empower us to reflect Your love and truth in all we do. Amen.
