Scripture Focus: Filipi 2:5-11

Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name; that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
- Philippians 2:5-11 (WEB)

Study:

This passage highlights the profound humility and obedience of Christ despite His divine nature. Though He existed in the form of God, Jesus willingly emptied Himself, taking on human likeness and becoming a servant. His incarnation was not a claim for equality but a self-sacrificial act of love. Jesus' humility led Him to obediently endure death on the cross, the most humiliating and painful form of execution. Because of this, God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him a name above every other name. This teaches us about the true nature of Christ as both fully God and fully man, who humbled Himself for our salvation.

Application:

Today, we are challenged to follow Christ’s example of humility and selflessness. In a world that often promotes pride and selfish ambition, Jesus calls us to serve others with the same attitude He showed. Recognising Jesus’ humility invites us to examine our own hearts and attitudes towards others. It’s a reminder that true greatness in God's kingdom comes through humility and obedience to His will. This passage encourages us to trust in Jesus’ lordship and to confess Him as Lord in every aspect of our lives.

Reflection Questions:

  • How can I emulate Christ’s humility in my daily life?
  • In what ways do I struggle with pride or self-centeredness?
  • What does it mean for me to confess Jesus as Lord today?
  • How does understanding Jesus’ obedience to death on the cross affect my faith?
  • Am I willing to serve others as Jesus served?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for humbling Yourself to take on human form and to die for our sins. Help me to follow Your example of humility and obedience. Teach me to serve others selflessly and to honour You in all I do. May Your name be exalted in my life and in the world. Amen.
